Led by acclaimed saxophonist José A. Zayas Cabán, {Trés} brings their Tribute to Puerto Rico national tour and fundraiser to Philadelphia in a program that spotlights the music and composers of Puerto Rico.
After Hurricane Maria, Cabán put together a program that would inspired others with the beauty and diversity of Puerto Rican artists and traditions as well as bring attention to the lack of awareness about Puerto Rico in the United States mainland. “Approximately half of mainland residents don’t even know that Puerto Rico is a colony of the United States. So I felt it appropriate that we incorporate an arrangement of La Borinqueña, the Puerto Rican national anthem,” said Cabán.
One of the many elements that make {Trés} unique is the ensemble’s commitment to social causes connected to Puerto Rico, such as fundraising concerts to assist in Hurricane Irma and Maria recovery efforts. The upcoming concert at Teatro Esperanza is raising funds for Friends of Puerto Rico, an organization dedicated to creating an economic and innovation hub in Puerto Rico by investing in the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs.
Concert attendees will be given the opportunity to make donations to Friends of Puerto Rico. Donations can also be made online at www.friendsofpuertorico.org.

ABOUT {Trés}
{Trés} started as a collaborative project by José Antonio Zayas Cabán and Colin Young, to create transcriptions for the ensemble (2 saxophones and piano) to perform. The trio has since performed chamber music by a wide range of composers (Villa Lobos, Fanny Mendelssohn, Poulenc, J.S. Bach, and Glinka) in Central America, the Caribbean, and throughout the United States
Recently, {Trés} finished a national tour titled A Tribute to Puerto Rico to raise awareness about the devastation from Hurricanes Irma and María. A portion of the proceeds from the tour were directed to Puerto Rico and the island’s efforts to recover. This inspired the {Trés} 2019 project, their first annual multi-week residency in Puerto Rico.
As recipients of the 2019 New Music USA Project Grant, José and {Trés} are beginning collaborations with composers such as MacArthur and Guggenheim Award recipient Miguel Zenón, Brooklyn-based Angelica Negrón, Illinois-based Carlos Carrillo, and Dublin, Ireland-based Amanda Feery, {Trés} will bring free concerts – that will include new music – to low income communities across the island.
As a concert saxophonist and pedagogue, José A. Zayas Cabán has presented performances and taught master classes throughout Europe, the Caribbean, and North America. Beyond the Tribute to Puerto Rico tour, as a native Puerto Rican (Mayagüez, Puerto Rico) and member of an underserved (Latino) community, José has developed other non-traditional projects, allowing him and his collaborators to address our concerns about current events. Of these projects, two of them have been collaborations with Princeton University based composers Shelley Washington and Gemma Peacocke, and the subsequent recordings of Skin and Big Talk. Skin, for alto saxophone and electronics, is a work that considers the disparity individuals experience based on the color of their skin and Big Talk, a duo for two Baritone Saxophones, is, in effect, an open letter to those who tolerate, or take part in, discrimination and harassment that asks them to cease and desist, and a refusal to accept or normalize these acts.
Located in the Twin Cities area, Casey Rafn currently holds positions at the Lundstrum Center for Performing Arts, Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists, and is the pianist for the Bloomington Chorale. An award-winning performer and active freelancer, his upcoming season includes performances in Switzerland, Uruguay, and Shell Lake, WI. Originally from Two Harbors, MN, he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from The University of Iowa studying under Dr. Ksenia Nosikova.
Colin Young is a concert saxophonist and educator living near Des Moines, Iowa. An active solo and chamber musician, Colin performs regularly with the piano trio {Trés} which performed in Costa Rica, Mexico City as well as throughout the United States. He also performs with the Des Moines Symphony and the Des Moines Metro Concert and Big Band as well as the Turner Center Jazz Orchestra and has recently played with the Minnesota Orchestra. As a member of the saxophone quartet Axius, Colin won prizes at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, the Music Teachers National Association Chamber Music Competition, and the North American Saxophone Alliance Saxophone Quartet Competition. Colin currently serves on the faculties of Drake University and Grinnell College in Grinnell Iowa. As a soloist, Colin has given guest recitals and masterclasses across the United States. Colin is a Yamaha Performing Artist as well as a Rousseau Mouthpiece artist.
