Twelve Esperanza Academy students are exhibiting their work at the Woodmere Art Museum this February as part of the annual Prints Link Philadelphia art show. Prints Link Philadelphia is a coalition of community arts organizations, art centers, museums, schools and teaching artists who develop curriculum and projects to educate and promote printmaking to children and teens in the Philadelphia region.
This year’s exhibition, titled “Transferring Ideas”, features prints by students from public, charter, and independent schools, from third grade through high school. “Transferring Ideas” was created not only as a way to celebrate the art of printmaking but also to encompass the diverse ideas expressed by the students through their print work. Printmaking is a process by which an image is etched or carved into one surface and transferred or printed onto another, usually paper, parchment, or some sort of fabric. This process requires both technical skill as well as artistic ability. Most importantly, the process requires patience, an essential lesson for any child to learn.
In an article by Newsworks, the Robert McNeil Jr. Curator of Education at Woodmere Art Museum, Hildy Tow, spoke of the exhibit:
“[The exhibit] is an extraordinary display of both students’ artwork and the amazing educational experiences these students have had with outstanding teachers. What unifies the exhibition is the exuberant and versatile use of printmaking processes that promote experimentation and provide enormous possibilities for students’ growth, discovery and self-expression,”
